This is a unique piece of art memorabilia made at the end of April 1970 in New Haven at the time of the famous Bobby Seale Black Panther trial and Yale University strike. It is a black and white photo approximately 7 inches by 10 inches in size mounted on a stiff backing and that backing in turn mounted on a black backing as shown in my first picture. My second picture is a closer view of part of the item to give more detail although the focus is not quite as good.
I obtained this item in 1970 and I know there were not more than a handful made then and none after 1970. My belief is that this may be the only one still in existence -- in any event, if there might be any other(s), the piece certainly has never been on the market or publicly available, nor is there any reason to think another will ever surface. So it is truly a unique item. What the photo pictures is a wall in New Haven plastered with these posters made in connection with the Black Panther trial.
The large poster on the left is, of course, Bobby Seale, and others show a famous photograph of Huey Newton as well as one of Lonnie McLucas etc. Above is part of the slogan that was also displayed on the wall, saying at least in part NEW HAVEN PANTHER DEFENSE. This item is in superb condition -- it has been in storage for almost all of the nearly 45 years since it was made, so it is not faded or damaged.
The photography is sharp and this print is excellent. All in all, this is a great item of memorabilia. Face to face -- it is NOT, however, available for sale at a significant discount. NOTE: This price has been REDUCED to bring it in line with some other one-of-a-kind fine photographer prints from the 1960s era -- perhaps now on the low side but I'm just using the best judgment I can.
ALSO, since a couple of viewers have offered comment, please note that this piece is NOT by the photographer David Fenton, who published a volume entitled SHOTS An American Photographer's Journal 1967 - 1972 with forward by Tom Hayden and commentary by Norman Mailer. Fenton has a photograph in that volume from a similar location at approximately the same time although Fenton's on April 30 is a bit later, with a poster added; also, although collectors and experts can decide for themselves, it seems to me the piece here is significantly better than Fenton's photograph in SHOTS.
