Awarded to and depicting a Black Congolese Soldier! Congolese recruit for the Belgian Army during the Second World War. Although Belgium was occupied by the Nazis during World War II, its African Colony, the Belgian Congo, was still administered by the Belgian Government in Exile in London. This Government was in turn strongly influenced by British Intelligence because the Allies desperately needed Congolese diamonds for the manufacture of weapons and related equipment, while engaged in efforts to stop German agents from purchasing those same scarce diamonds. Nazi exploitation of African resources was a serious threat. The first Atom bomb was made from Congolese Uranium.

Imagine if the Nazis had "gotten there first"! To protect the Congo against Axis invasion, Britain and the Belgian Administration in exile deployed the Congolese Army to fight the Italians and Germans in Northern Africa. This rare and handsome medal was awarded by the Allies to black Congolese soldiers who served in the said campaigns. Quite an amazing piece of history!

Belgian rule in the Congo was notoriously oppressive. The Congolese war effort is one of the things that helped put international pressure on Belgium to reform its Colonial policies and ultimately grant the Congo autonomy.
