Original Vintage Jim Crow Era Double Sided Railroad/Train Segregation Sign 9" X 17". UP FOR SALE IS A VERY RARE AND EXTREMELY SCARCE ORIGINAL VINTAGE ANTIQUE CIRCA 1900s (Turn Of The Century Era) RAILROAD TRAIN WOODEN DOUBLE SIDED SEGREGATION SIGN WITH FEMALE BRASS KEYHOLE BRACKETS USED FOR "LOCKING" DOWN THE SIGN ON THE WALL OF THE TRAIN.

THIS SIGN WAS FOUND INSIDE A HEAVY WOOD RAILROAD LOCKBOX MARKED (SOO LINE) ON THE FRONT WHICH TELLS ME THAT IT MIGHT HAVE ORIGINALLY BEEN FROM THE SOO LINE RAILROAD. I HAVE INCLUDED A PHOTO OF THE SOO LINE RAILROAD WOODEN BOX IT WAS FOUND IN WHICH WILL "NOT" BE INCLUDED!! SIGN MEASURES 9" INCHES HIGH X 17" INCHES WIDE X 3/4 OF AN INCH THICK. IT IS DOUBLE SIDED READING (FOR WHITE PASSENGERS) ON ONE SIDE AND THE OPPOSITE SIDE READING (FOR COLORED PASSENGERS).

This untouched, all-original, double-sided wooden sign is an extraordinarily RARE piece of Black American history-- an artifact of the "Jim Crow" era when segregation of the African American race was unfortunately, most commonplace. This sign once hung on the inside of a railroad car, designating the line behind which African Americans must remain-- in the back of the car. It would have been used on the train car to designate/demarcate the seats to be used by "Colored" i, e.

Black riders in the old segregated states in accordance with laws that lasted into the 1960s. Notoriously, during that sad era; African Americans in the states of the former confederacy were forces to ride in the back of the train car. The sign is painted in gold lettering on both sides as follows: one side of the sign is painted, "FOR COLORED PASSENGERS", while the other side of the sign is painted, "FOR WHITE PASSENGERS". The sign is in all-original condition and has some paint fading, fading of the wood stain in given places (please view photos), and imperfections in the wood as noted in photos. These do not impact the integrity of the sign and are appropriate to the age and purpose of the piece.

The sign retains all of its original hardware including solid brass "keyhole" receptacle for hanging and locking the sign inside of the railroad train car. An utterly phenomenal, extremely RARE, one-of-a-kind, museum-worthy piece of Black Americana history that may very well be the only one of its kind extant today! 100% AUTHENTIC 100% GENUINE AND 100% ORIGINAL "UNTOUCHED" VINTAGE CONDITION SHOWING NORMAL SIGNS OF USAGE WHICH IS APPROPRIATE WITH THE AGING PROCESS SUCH AS A LOT OF WEAR, NATURAL PATINA AND VINTAGE CHARACTER INCLUDING NICKS, MARKS AND SCRATCHES!!! I HAVE NOT TRIED TO CLEAN, OIL OR WIPE OFF THIS SIGN. IT IS STILL COVERED WITH DUST, DIRT, ETC.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO CLEAN OR OIL IT; IT WILL LOOK BEAUTIFUL!!! AS YOU CAN SEE; THE (FOR WHITE PASSENGERS) SIDE WAS GOUGED OUT AND DESTROYED; OBVIOUSLY BY A VERY ANGRY AFRICAN AMERICAN AT THE TIME. JUST TRY AND IMAGINE THE ANGER AND EMOTION THAT WAS IN THAT MOMENT WHEN SOMEONE TOOK A KEY OR POCKET KNIFE AND DESTROYED THE SIDE OF THE SIGN WHICH READS (FOR WHITE PASSENGERS) IN MY OPINION; THIS TRULY SHOWS HOW UNFAIR AND IMMORAL THE WORLD WE WERE LIVING IN HAD BECOME. IT WAS SO WRONG IN SO MANY WAYS WHAT THE WHITES WERE DOING TO THE BLACKS DURING THE JIM CROW SEGREGATION MOVEMENT ERA. 100% THE REAL DEAL - SUPER RARE HERE GUYS AND GALS!!
