Scarce COON CHICKEN INN metal figural toothpick or match holder, made of metal. The top of the hat is hollow to hold toothpicks or stick matches.
It is about 3 1/2 inches tall and base is approx. This piece was part of a large collection of Black Americana from an estate. The Coon Chicken Inn was a fried-chicken restaurant chain located on the Old Bothell Highway on the outskirts of the Seattle city limits, in what is today the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle. The restaurant was famous for its ubiquitous logo of a "Coon, " or a caricatured African American male.
Despite protests from the African American community, the Seattle branch remained open until late 1949. Please view the many pictures provided as the most.
