The 27th USCT had a unique mix of many free Black Men and some runaway slaves, many of whom escaped from slave state Kentucky. The 27th USCT participated in the Battle of Crater in 1864. Approximately 180,000 African American soldiers served the Union during the Civil War with nearly 40,000 dying for the cause. This massive, stunning document measures about 30" x 21" and is roughly the size of a small coffee table.
