RARE WHISTLE BOTTLING COMPANY EARLY 20TH CENTURY AME RI CAN VINTAGE WOOD BOX SODA CRATE with REINFORCING TIN CORNER STRIPS, FEATURING RED & BLACK INK STAMPED GRAPHIC ICONOGRAPHY, NEW BEDFORD, MA. Early 20th century Ame ri can vintage soda advertising & wood box soda crates. 16 12" Length x 11" Depth x 9 Height.
Very scarce and from the early 20th century, when New Bedford, MA was a bustling Ame ri can commercial center, not only for the whaling industry but also for the manufacture and production of a whole host of products, such as this rare Whistle Bottling Co. Wood box soda crate with tin reinforcing strips, built-in lifting handles and red and black ink stamped sidewall graphic iconography. It looks to have been lacquered long ago, since its surfaces remain scuffed, soiled and its reflectivity, muted. Often, soft drink manufacturers would cover their reusable wood box crates with a clear lacquer to make them more durable and to last longer.Often they would come into contact with water and the condensation from cold storage and subsequent transport, which would eventually lead to the wood plank floors and sidewalls weakening or rotting. This piece of New Bedford, MA mercantile history points to the many New England cities which were once thriving late 19th and early 20th century industrial hubs. Good to Very Good overall vintage condition. The item "RARE WHISTLE BOTTLING CO VINT WD BOX SODA CRATE RD/BLK STMPD INK, NEW BEDFORD MA" is in sale since Monday, August 24, 2020.
