Rare RRPC Aftican American BBQ Carville, Louisiana Leprosarium, Real Photo, Hansen's Disease, Leprosy. Rare Real Photo Postcard, Barbecue under the Oaks, Carville, Louisiana. Postcard depicts a large group of African Americans standing in line for a barbecue under the oak trees. The photo probably dates from the 1950 or 1960's based on the bicycle. Individuals with Leprosy or Hansen's disease were confined there until a cure was found. You can see a bicycle, a man in a wheelchair and some people sitting on what appears to be a Cushman scooter. The crowd looks predominantly African American. Some of the people serving the barbecue look like they might be nuns based on their headgear.
The postcard is a rare historical artifact and document of America's past. Size: 5 3/8" wide x 3 1/2" high. Type: divided back, Kodak paper. Condition: unused, slightly curled, 3 spots as shown, slight fissures on right side (only on top side of photo).
