FROM A SMOKE FREE HOME. HISTORY OF THE FIRST REGIMENT COMPRISED OF FREE BLACK VOLUNTEERS FROM A NORTHERN STATE. IT WAS LED BY ROBERT GOULD SHAW, A BOSTON ABOLITIONIST. AMONG ITS MEMBERS, WERE TWO SONS OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS.

IN 1863, THE 54TH REGIMENT ATTACKED FORT WAGNER, AT THE ENTRANCE OF CHARLESTON HARBOR. THEY LOST THE BATTLE AND 50 PER CENT OF THE UNIT WERE KILLED, INCLUDING SHAW, OR WOUNDED. SEVERAL WEEKS, A REPLENISHED 54TH CAPTURED FORT WAGNER. THE UNIT CONTINUED TO SERVE UNTIL THE END OF THE WAR, WITH MOST OF THEIR BATTLES FOUGHT IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

THE EXISTENCE OF THE 54TH REGIMENT ENCOURAGED THE FORMATION OF MORE UNION BLACK REGIMENTS. EVENTUALLY 180,000 BLACK SOLDIERS WERE SERVING IN THE UNION ARMY.
