Rare 19th Century Cast Iron African-American Lawn Boy Hitching Post JW Fiske NY
Rare Antique 19th CENTURY CAST IRON JW FISKE AFRICAN AMERICAN LAWN JOCKEY or HITCHING POST. Presented for your consideration is this beautiful and rare antique cast iron lawn jockey.

This Faithful Groomsman model cast iron statue represents an African-American Lawn Jockey or Young African-American Slave standing on a square bale of cotton. It was manufactured by the JW Fiske Company around 1865 who was the preeminent maker and retailer of architectural cast zinc and cast-iron in New York from 1862 to 1900. This particular model was listed in their catalog. During the 19th Century the Faithful Groomsman statue was a popular item and the "Jacko Graves" story it represented was well known.

Tom "Jacko" Graves was an African American youth who served during the American Revolutionary War alongside General George Washington who was quite impressed with his dedication with helping the troops. This historic Lawn Jockey was intended to be placed in front yards as hitching posts similar to those of footmen lanterns found near residential or business entrances. This statue is in very good condition with no visible cracks or breaks. It has been re-painted (now with a white complexion) and the current layers of paint are loose and peeling off. The lantern held by the figure is a contemporary addition (circa 1920s).

Measures 45" tall with a 15 1/2" square x 7 tall base. Overall in VERY GOOD condition.
