Rare 1940's Black Americana Man/Boy Candombe Jigger Dancing Duet Wind-Up Tin Toy. Exceedingly rare and charming vintage "CANDOMBERO BOYS" the unique black Americana "Candombe" dancing toy in Excellent overall condition. This is probably the best example I've ever seen! This toy depicts a musical "candombe" duet with a small black mulatto boy playing the smaller drum (where his is sitting on) while a large mulatto man jigs on the bigger drum. Litho tin toy with an early coiled-wire clockwork mechanism.

Made in Argentina by unknown maker, circa 1940's. 10 inches (25 cm) height. This toy is complete, original and it is in excellent overall condition with bright litho and vivid colors. The mechanism is a bit weak but still working. It shows minor signs of wear, a few markings and scratches here and there, and tiny spots on the small boy's drumhead (see all pictures that are part of the present description).

THIS EXTREMELY RARE TOY WOULD BE A VERY IMPORTANT ADDITION TO ANY TIN TOY OR BLACK AMERICANA COLLECTION. Candombe (can-dome-bey) is an African derived rhythm that has been an important part of Uruguayan culture for over two hundred years. This Afro-Uruguayan dance genre, first appeared with Africans who were brought into the region as slaves around the mid-1700s. In its traditional context, the dance celebrates the coronation of Congolese kings. Candombe today comes to life, in its most prevalent form, during Montevideo's carnival celebrations.

To understand how this dance, which is so strongly rooted in Uruguayan culture evolved, one would need to turn back the pages of African and South American history to look at how this contagious rhythm anchored at the shores of Montevideo. Candombe 1932, 49 x 63 cm by Pedro Figari.
