When I painted this I was thinking about the old church that I went to as a child. People used to gather in the church yard on Sunday morning. For many this was their main social event of the week. I was trying to bring back that feeling.
This piece was done on wood and then sealed to protect the artwork. This is an old rough piece of wood. There are nail holes and a couple of partial saw cuts from someone's old project. The edges are a little rough. All of these things just add to the ambience of the piece. This is a 3/4 inch thick piece of wood and the sides are painted.
