Original You Don't Have to Be Jewish Levy's Rye New York Subway Poster Mad Men

One of the most iconic pieces of advertising to ever grace the New York City subway system, designed by William Taubin for Doyle Dane Berbach, copy by Judy Protas during the heyday of DDB. Instantly successful and massively recognizable, these advertisements were popular with everybody from local Levy's customers to Malcolm X himself, who famously posed beside one of these exact posters. In an era before diverse representation in advertising, these (admittedly indelicately racial) posters were a progressive first. The bold design caught audiences instantly, and the casting of real people as models (most were simply New York locals near the DDB offices) won immediate acclaim. There are few more famous pieces of distinctly New York advertising from the industrys 1960s heyday, and these posters keep an immense charm to this day.

These posters have been reproduced for years, yet original copies are massively difficult to come across. Some copies have traded for four figure prices, and collectors of Jewish ephemera tend to vie for city nostalgics and Mad Men fanatics alike.

This is a 1967 printing, originally owned by a DDB employee. It was mounted on posterboard by the New York City Transit Authority as a demonstration copy and preserved in the employees personal collection for forty years. The card stock is still strong but the poster has some nicks and scuffs, while the paper has faintly yellowed. Condition, however, is absolutely presentable, far better than many remaining copies. The poster would certainly benefit from a glass frame and/or matting.
