This is one of many great vintage & antique items I'm currently listing from various estates. Please take a look at my other merchandise at your leisure. Oil on Canvas Painting New York Jazz 1933 by Thomas Van Buren Grand Central School of Art, New York City c1933.
Vibrant and colorful Depression era oil painting entitled N. Painted by Thomas Van Buren while a student at the Grand Central School of Art in New York City (founded 1923 / closed 1944). The painting features a recognizable portrait of Louis Armstrong on trumpet as part of a seven piece orchestra. I would only be guessing at whom the other musicians might be.
However - each face is distinctive and appears to portray an actual Jazz musician. Perhaps these were drawn from one live performance - or are a conglomeration of black musicians on the New York scene at that time. The painting measures 20 x 30 inches. Artist name, title, and school are hand-written on the back stretcher.A label from the Grand Central School of Art also remains. The face of the painting itself does not appear to be signed. Title includes the date 1933. Painting may date to 1933 but no later than 1944 when the school was closed.
This rare painting of an all African American jazz orchestra represents the Harlem Renaissance period, and is reminiscent of artwork being produced in the time of the WPA New Deal art projects of the Great Depression. Hopefully this will appeal to Jazz Aficionados, collectors of Black Americana, the Harlem Renaissance, and lovers of all things New York. Canvas Measures 20 x 30 Inches. Framed Measurements 23.5 x 33.5 Inches.
