Marie Laveau (1801 - 1881) was known as the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. She wore a headwrap, called a tignon, often embellished with feathers. This was a result of the tignon' laws, which prohibited black women from displaying their hair in public. It is a fascinating period in black history. This antique pipe is beautifully carved, and has very interesting natural coloration from the tobacco oils soaked up by the meerschaum, which is why meerschaum is so prized as a material for making pipes.
Note the exceptional coloration on the face. There was an excellent repair done to the end of the meerschaum with a metal plate, but the original mouthpiece still unscrews for cleaning. This is an exceptionally well carved pipe, and important historically. It was probably carved in mid 1800's.
