It features nailed steamed and bent ash hardwood interior and exterior wooden rim, circumnavigating the entire rim of the basket's opening on both sides, lending the basket strength and structural integrity. The basket is an early one, with 100% original and absolutely untouched wooden surfaces. The only damage to the antique basket is found with some black ash wood material loss on a few of the splints. There's some minimal, isolated wood loss but no significant fractures or major blow-outs. This is evidence, along with the basket's wonderful nut brown antique finish and some surface soiling found on one of its long sidewalls, of it being previously used and apparently used often. Fortunately it wasn't abused and would have been used as a gathering basket for fruit or cut flowers. Wonderful wood patina and original surfaces. Now, incredibly 120 to 145 years old, it remains as an artifact of our collective New England past.
