Exquisite Union Case 1/4 Plate Ambrotypes Husband & Wife & Daughter
We are offering two 1/4 plate ambrotypes in a Union case. One is of a middle-aged husband and wife; the other is of a younger woman, most likely their daughter. The wife has a long gold chain around her neck, to which a watch would have been attached - we can see that the watch had been tucked beneath her waist band.
The chain and the ring on her finger were tinted gold. The design of the Union case is in high relief depicting a detailed motif of a 16th century English noblewoman, with a long veil, riding side-saddle on a prancing horse. A large bird rests on her hand - it appears to be a hawk. A boy accompanies her on foot, restraining a hunting dog with a leash. In the background, a distant castle can be seen.
