Obverse- (Dark and has not been cleaned) Stratford Hall Plantation 31 Virginia. Has iron shackles engraved for sinister decoration. Name and date are crude and most probably applied by someone other than the engraver, who made this tag.
Stratford Hall Plantation is well known as the birth place of Southern General Robert E. All workers on this plantation lived in nice warm cabins that they built. The Virginia Plantation was high over looking the Potomac River. Tag has spotty mottled patina, with a few soft patches of greenish patina and scattered burgundy oxidation, on some of the reverse side. Very light gentle pitting in a few spots. This is one of two tags from Stratford Hall Plantation that were found in a junk jewlery box at a tag sale, somewhere in Virginia.
