Estate sale find, vintage original photo by. Civil Rights Photographer Ernest C. Withers of a pretty African American Lady Boarding and American Airlines Plane wearing a mink. He is best known for capturing over 60 years of African American history in the segregated South, with iconic images of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Memphis sanitation strike, and musicians including those related to Memphis blues and Memphis soul. His photographs were routinely published in the Memphis World which chronicled the complexity and variety of its readers' lives.
In marked contrast with the reporting in white newspapers, which selectively focused on poverty, violence, and civil rights protests, the World, like many black newspapers, celebrated the accomplishments and documented the challenges faced by the city's diverse population.
