LINDBERG (June 26, 1920-June 24, 2007) was a United States Marine Corps corporal who fought in three island campaigns during World War II. During the Battle of Iwo Jima, he was a member of the patrol that captured the top of Mount Suribachi, where he helped to raise the first U. Flag on the island on February 23, 1945. Lindberg won the Silver Star for bravery at Suribachi's base, looking for entrances along the crater's rim after the 1st flag was raised. Of the 40 men platoon who made the climb and raised the first flag on captured Japanese territory, 36 were killed or wounded in the subsequent fight on Iwo Jima.

Impressive black and white 8 x 10 photograph of the first flag raising atop Mount Suribachi. Signed and inscribed Charles Lindberg/1st Flag Raiser Iwo Jima/Feb.
