Ca1880 BOXED SET OF CHROMOLITHOGRAPH TRANSFORMATION TOY BLOCKS BLACK AMERICANA

Very rare and wonderful, ca1880 complete Boxed Set of Comic Transformation Cubes / Picture Blocks titled Jue de Cubes Comique. This fantastic set of chromolithograph paper over wood blocks are housed in their original paperboard and wood Box which measures approx. 8 by 13 1/2 by 3 3/4 tall. There are 6, large, hollow wooden blocks in the Set which each measure approx. 4 1/4 tall and 3 3/8" by 3" at the base.

The Blocks feature chromolithograph pastedowns on every side and can be made to form hundreds of different Comic Human Figures. When assembled "properly" the images formed include a Clown, a Comic African American / Black Man, a Policeman, a Soldier, a Sailor, a goofy looking Man and a weird looking Woman.

Each of these figures use all 6 blocks but any of the blocks can be rotated to create "crazy characters". The cover of the box features a wonderful image of children playing in an "enchanted forest" with trees that have human features and a castle in the distance.

Some of the Children are assembling a giant version of the Transformation Blocks while others play with other toys or have linked hands and are dancing around the tower of blocks. This very rare and simply fantastic set of chromolithographed Puzzle / Transformation Blocks is in very good condition - the colors on each side of each block are bright and vibrant with no significant soiling, staining or fading. There is light wear at the edges and corners of many of the blocks but there is no significant loss or significant wear to the paper pastedown surfaces. The original Box features wooden side panels with a paperboard top to the lid and bottom of the base. The Box is sound, strong and completely intact. The chromolithographed pastedown on the top of the lid is well preserved with some light soiling and light wear but generally well preserved and very attractive. There is a paper label on the inner surface of the lid that gives directions (in French).

We had never seen or heard of this fantastic set of Comic Puzzle / Transformation Blocks before and we believe that it is very rare.
