Black & White Children 1880 Photo Elmer Chickering Biracial Mulatto Americana
Original cabinet photograph of two African American boys along with a Caucasian girl by photographer Elmer Chickering of Boston. The previous owner said that the woman in the photo was his great grandmother and that the two biracial boys were her half brothers. Note that the white girl is dressed in fancy attire while the African American children are are clothed in burlap material. The photo appears to be a rare and whimsical way of acknowledging inter-racial relationships and families which was a difficult subject to broach in the years immediately following the American Civil War. Measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/4" inches.
