Black Kids Playing Tennis & Soccer Sand Pail ca. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO VIEW ALL 16 PHOTOS. This extremely rare embossed German sand pail dates from around 1900 and depicts two black kids engaged in a tennis match on one side and a game of soccer/football on the other.

Both these sports are not only very unusual for a beach toy, but black children were also very rarely depicted on them. The fact that no kids of another race are included in the picture at all, makes this piece all that much more unique. There are a couple of tiny splits in the narrow curled lip along the top, but they do not extend into the sides. The lithography shows a good amount of play wear that's made more visible by the strong photo lights. The pail still retains some of the gold coloring in many places, as well as a nice gloss to the finish.

It measures 5.75 inches in height (not counting the handle) and a diameter of 5.75 inches at the top. It is completely original, including the factory pressed wire clips for the handle, and I have provided many photos for you to assess its condition in detail. In collecting toys since the mid-1970s, I have come across a very large cross section of rare and unusual specimens. This one, however, is one that I have never seen or heard of before. It is extremely rare and highly desirable on account of its unique subject matter.
