Betye Saar Artist Proof 1964 Enchantress & Twilight Bird etching Black Americana
Here's an opportunity to own an early original (artist proof) Betye Saar. Original frame measures 21" wide by 25" high (and has never been opened), of Betye Saar's 1964, Enchantress And Twilight Bird. Etching, from mat bevel to bevel is 15 1/4" wide, 19 5/8" high.

Etching was matted and framed by The Gallery Frame Shop, on Ventura Blvd, in Sherman Oaks, CA. Pictures really can't adequately show the fine detail in this etching. Danto, Posture Of Contemplation, 1959 from an estate in Carlsbad, CA nearly 30 years ago. All three were matted and framed the same, in satin black wood frames. Betye Irene Saar (born July 30, 1926 in Los Angeles, California) is an American artist known for her work in the medium of assemblage, but is also a visual storyteller and an accomplished printmaker.

Saar was a part of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s, which engaged myths and stereotypes about race and femininity. Her work is considered highly political, as she challenged negative ideas about African-Americans throughout her career. There has been an apparent thread in my art that weaves from early prints of the 1960's through later collages and assemblages and ties into the current installations.

That thread is a curiosity about the mystical. It's a way of delving into the past and reaching into the future simultaneously. The art itself becomes the bridge. Curiosity about the unknown has no boundaries. Symbols, images, place and cultures merge.

The stars, the cards, the mystic vigil may hold the answers. By shifting the point of view an inner spirit is released.
