A Rare World Class Antique. Celebrate Black History with this exceptional carving. I restore fine antiques and it was love at first sight when I laid eyes on this wonderful piece, it is 30 inches tall. I found him at an estate sale in Carpentersville, Illinois.

The owner was a retired pilot for American Airlines. I knew with some meticulous restoration he would be spectacular. He exceeds all my expectations, my hat is off to the artist who envisioned and created this work of art! You will not find a more beautiful mahogany. Incredible graining & highlights in this amazing wood.

I restored the finish with many, many coats of hand rubbed varnish.... Capturing, preserving & showcasing all the rich natural beauty of this wood. Entirely hand carved from a solid log of mahogany.... If you look at the underside of the base you can see the growth rings, even the base is beautiful.

I sanded the base flat & smooth, it was uneven & made the carving wobbly, now it sits solid & true. I love all of the fine details....... Such as his pant leg rolled up to the knee on one leg, the hat is spectacular, his face is amazing, great details carved into the jawline, the lips, nose & eyes. The shoulder bag & fruit in his hand all add up to make this guy look fantastic....

Of course the curved machete is world class. Lots of character marks in this piece including many shrinkage cracks/splits, nicks, some wood missing here and there such as the back of the hat.... The cracks are due to normal age related shrinkage, to be expected when any solid log ages.

I restored 2 areas with a small dowel peg to reinforce crack/splits... One is at the back of the hat, the other area is at the rear of the base, these areas had some softened wood especially under the base, the pegs and varnish have strengthened & reinforced the wood.
