Antique Effanbee Virginia Curtis Austin Lucifer Marionette Puppet Black Americana. For your consideration is this wonderful & seldom seen antique Effanbee black Americana marionette. He was made in 1938 & designed by the famous puppeteer, Virginia Curtis Austin.
Austin was not well known until the mid 1930's, when she was discovered by Edgar Bergen (Candice Bergen's father) and sculpted Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd for Bergen's puppet shows. Included with the marionette is its paperwork & Everything you need to use nicely tied up above the puppets head in the box and a handwritten script to a play, written 70 years ago and kept along side this beautiful puppet. Lucifer was one of the very first Effanbee puppets made for Marshall Field's stores and is one of the Clippo the Clown "Clippo Club" members, made by Curtis Crafts. The puppet appears to be in unused condition, as it is packed neatly and tightly in its original box, with all of its strings wrapped up nicely with no knots or tangles. Has its original clothes with the exception of his straw hat.Appears to be constructed out of composition. No chips, cracks, crazing, or paint wear.
Looks just about as good as new. Box has shelf wear from storage over the years, including a tear in one of the corner edges, but the label on the side is clear and recognizable. Puppet measures approximately 14 tall.
15 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 3 1/2. A very unique and hard to find piece of authentic Black Americana. PLEASE VIEW ALL PHOTOS CAREFULLY AS THEY ARE PART OF MY DESCRIPTION AS WELL.
