Antique 1888 J & E "Bad Accident" Black Americana Cast Iron Mechanical Bank. This antique, rare and original mechanical bank is in great working condition with lots of its original paint left. Manufactured circa 1888 by J & E Stevens Co. And designed by Charles Bailey, it is one of the more popular of their mechanical banks. To operate, a coin is placed under and between the shoes of the driver. A two part lever beside the cattail is then pressed forward. Immediately the boy darts from behind the plant and turns facing the front. At the same time the donkey, frightened by the boy, rears up on his hind legs. This causes the cart to tilt back. In turn, the coins slides from between the shoes of the driver back into the provided slot.

On the underside of the cart there is a round stopper to to take out the coins. Measures just under 10" long, 6 1/4" in height and 3 1/8 wide.
