Photo Album of an Interracial Group of Friends in the 1960s. Author: 1960s, African Americana Title: Photo Album of an Interracial Group of Friends in the 1960s. [African American] [Photography] Photo album of 45 black and white and color photos dating to the mid-to-late 1960s, showing a black couple in the early years of their marriage and their interracial friend group.
Album opens with two real photo postcards of the woman who owned the album, name unknown, with her husband Larry at Diamond Jim's Nevada Club. Handwritten captions below the postcards read "Wedding Day 3-16-66,'Las Vegas'" and "1st Anniversary 3-17-67,'Las Vegas'". Subsequent color Polaroid photos show the couple with various friends enjoying a meal together and playing Scrabble, with captions identifying the friends by first name, "Barbara", "Al", "Jimmy", "Uie" and "Bonita". Other photos show a different group of friends spending time together or dancing; "Georgia", "Jim", "Roy", "DeeDee" and "Rhonda".
Notably, both of these gatherings show interracial friendships and at least one interracial romantic couple. This album dates to a time when Nevada's anti-miscegenation laws were newly repealed and the landmark court case Loving v. Virginia had not yet federally overturned state laws forbidding interracial marriage.Interracial relationships still incurred a strong social stigma at the time, making these photographs a scarce record of mixed black and white couples openly showing affection. Other photos show the couple and their friends on a harbor cruise, at a kids birthday party, and posing with a new car. The latest photos in the album appear to date to the early 70s. Spiral bound in vibrant 60's purple, red, yellow, and green floral design.
Most photos adhering tightly to album pages and in clean, clear condition. An album documenting a black couple and their diverse friend group in the midst of the civil rights era.
