A rare and important book. William Wilberforce together withThomas Clarkson was probably the most influential person in the early English abolitionist movement. Together with Thomas Clarkson and Granville Sharp, Wilberforce worked tirelessly from the latter part of the 18th century to put an end to the slave trade through parliamentary action. In 1791 Wilberforce presented "An Abstract of the Evidence" before a scandalized parliament. As powerful a case as the Abstract.

Made, Wilberforce's bill was defeated. Undeterred by thias setback, Wilberforce and his committee set to work once more, and after further delays and setbacks brought the matter up under the new Whig administration in 1806. Several more restrictive measures were passed , and finally on 25 March, 1807 the royal assent was given to a bill abolishing the trade in slaves. (Printing and the Mind of Man). Not in the Blockson Collection. ACCOMPANIED BY AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED FROM WILBERFORCE.

Single 8vo leaf, folded to form four pages, written on two sides. Burder: Dear Sir, I return you many thanks for your obliging present which I assure you I regret that I have not this very day leisure to peruse---I look forward to the perusal of it with profit as well as pleasure.
