Book measures approximately 11" x 9". This book is not complete and in rough shape but even in it's present condition, the rarity of a 1st Edition is a must have for the collector of Black Americana. The condition issues include: The spine cover is detached. The pages containing the illustration for "G" and rhyme for "H", illustration for "Y" and rhyme for "Z" are torn and are a partial page.
The pages with the illustration for "K" and rhyme for "L", illustration "O" and rhyme for "P", illustration for "V" and rhyme for "W", illustration for "W" and rhyme for "X", illustration for "Z" are missing. Numerous pages have rips, tears, chipping and pencil scribbling. Please see all photos to further evaluate the condition.

This book was acquired from the estate of a collector from Syracuse, New York who had amassed a huge amount of Black Americana memorabilia. I was able to acquire several of the rare, hard to find pieces along with some of those more common. Please check my other listings for details. Right after the Civil War, books were published that attempted to refute the "immorality" of slavery.
These books were often illustrated with photographs of former slaves dressed in outlandish costumes looking happy and content. Texts purported to document the kind and reasonable treatment of slaves in the South. All of these books relied on racial stereotypes. Racial stereotypes persisted in the United States long after the Civil War and these children's books were also especially popular in England. At about this same time, silent movies were showing white actors in blackface and featuring minstrel shows. George Willard Bonte was an artist well-known for his portraits and Louise Quarles Bonte was an artist well-known for her miniatures.
