1890's BLACK AMERICANA SMOKING TOBACCO TIN LITHO ADVERTISING TIN PAIL with LID
Very Rare and wonderful, 1890s Tin Lithograph, Large Size Black Americana Tobacco Tin which contained "Nier Hair Smoking Tobacco". This fantastic, pail shaped, Black Americana Tobacco Tin measures approx. 6 3/4" tall by 5 1/2" in diameter and retains its original lid and its original wire bale handle. The Tin features identical images on the front and rear surfaces of a stereotypical "African" woman with large hoop earrings and a matching hoop in her nose. Text to the sides and below the Image reads "Smoke or Chew / Nigger Hair Smoking Tobacco". Further text below the Image reads "Registered in Patent Office April 3, 1878". Of Milwaukee, Wisconsin "The American Tobacco Company Successor". While the Tin carries the 1878 Patent date, we know that it was manufactured in the early 1890's - shortly after the formation of the American Tobacco Company in 1890 but before the name of B. Among the most graphic and outrageous, racially bigoted examples of American Advertising of the late 19th century, this Tin has become something of an iconic piece of Black Americana. Today it is sex and violence that sells (at least if one is to judge from the Advertising and Entertainment Industries output) while in the 19th and early 20th century it was bigotry and hatred that often was used to promote American Products.

This very rare and important, 19th century tin litho Tobacco Tin is in very good condition. This Tin was produced in two color variations and this example has the more muted, yellow background color. The colors are rich and warm with no fading or staining. The lithographed surface is well preserved with no large areas of surface loss or scuffing but with scattered tiny surface blemishes - small scratches and nicks to the surface lithography.

The lid and bale handle are present well preserved although the lid has no surface lithography (as manufactured) and has some light surface oxidation. Overall this outstanding, Black Americana Tobacco Tin is well preserved and displays nicely. Please see the numerous scans below for a good indication of the form and the condition of this rare piece of American Advertising. A very rare and important, 19th century Black American Tobacco Tin and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
