Original and very rare, 1872 Illustrated Pamphlet on John Brown and the Raid on Harper's Ferry titled "The Annals of Harper's Ferry with Sketches of Its Founder, and Many Prominent Characters Connected with Its History, Anecdotes, &c". By Josephus Junior (John Barry). Printed at the Office of the "Berkeley Union, " 2nd Edition. This rare Anti-Slavery Volume measures approx. 5 3/4 by 9 and contains 120 pages plus 2 plates and its original, delicate illustrated paper wraps.

The work treats the history of the Town, with emphasis and great detail on John Brown's Raid and events though the end of the Civil War. This Second Edition is a completely rewritten and much expanded version of the 1869 edition. About half the book is devoted to John Brown's raid.

This edition includes a final chapter about Harper's Ferry after the Civil War. The author, John Barry was born in Ireland but spent most of his life in Harper's Ferry and became something of an authority on its history. He witnessed many of the events he describes in this Volume, including the John Brown Raid, and he attended Brown's trial. The Volume is bound in its original, delicate paper wraps with a portrait of John Brown on the front wrap and a portrait of John W.

Garrett on the rear wrap. There are two plates included in the work - these are additional portraits of Brown and Garrett.

This exceptionally rare and fascinating, John Brown / Harper's Ferry Volume is bound in its original, delicate, illustrated paper wrappers which are both present but edge worn and they appear to have been reattached at the spine edge. The binding is tight but lacks the spine cover. The interior pages are complete, tight and generally clean with soiliong to the title page. Affixed to the inside of the rear wrap is an 1870's advertisement for the Mountain View Hotel in Harper's Ferry!
