Very Rare and awesome, 1860's Tin Lithograph, Large size Black Americana Tobacco Tin which contained NiggerHair Smoking Tobacco. " This is a fantastic, pail shaped Black Americana Tobacco Tin that measures approximately 6 3/4" tall x 5 1/2 in diameter and still has the original lid and original wire bale. It has identical images on the front and back surfaces of a stereotypical "African Woman" with large hoop earrings and a matching hoop in her nose. The text to the sides and below the image reads "Smoke or Chew / NiggerHair Smoking Tobacco".
Additional text below the image reads Registered in Patent Office April 3, 1878. Of Milwaukee, Wisconsin" "The Americian Tobacco Company Successor. This tin carries the 1878 Patent date, but was probably manufactured around 1910, which was after the formation of the American Tobacco Company in 1890 but before the name of B. This tin has become something of an iconic piece of Black Americana. This very rare and important 19th century Tin Litho Tobacco Tin is in good to very good condition.
These tins were produced in two color variations and this on has the orange/brown background color. The lithographed surface has some blemishes. The lid and bale handle are present and are very well preserved.
The inside of the lid is pristine and the inside of the tine is not rusted and is in very good condition. This tin will display beautifully. Please look at the pictures below for the condition of this rare piece of American Advertising. This is a very rare and very important 19th Century Black American Tobacco Tin and would be an excellent addition to any collection!
