NEGRO SERMON, DELIVERED IN ALABAMA, BY CUDJO, A BLACK MAN TO AN ASSEMBLAGE OF BLACKS DECEMBER THE 25th, 1856. 5 x 9 inch pamphlet, 7 pages. A very rare early example of black slave folk humor. Cudjo in his sermon "scribes heben" as a place where there is no cotton to pick, no marster to whip, no wicked mistis to scold. There is enough underlying seriousness to call this piece satire.
The importance of this piece lies in the broad humor, the recording of folk beliefs and the accuracy of the dialect. The cover has a few small tears otherwise good condition!
