1800s ANTIQUE EARLY Americana TOPSY-TURVY African American HandMade CLOTH DOLL
This 19th Century Antique was my Great Aunt's (born in 1921) childhood Doll, which was passed down to her from her mother who was born in the late 1800's. It is uncertain where my Great-Great Aunt originally got this Primitive Collectible Doll or whether it was new or used when she received it as a child.

Topsy Turvy Dolls remain somewhat of a mystery as to whether they were made by black slaves or white masters as there seems to be no definitive answer after much research (I have more info from outside sources on the internet that can be found in google searches). Nonetheless, this is an incredible piece of American history and very few of them were produced.

This black/white cloth doll is entirely made by hand stitching with faint facial features that were painted and it appears to predate others I have seen similar to it. The doll measures 14 inches long from head to head and 10 inches wide from hand to hand. The black side of the doll (sometimes referred to as "darky" or "Mammy") has a red floral dress and matching bonnet hat; While the white side has a micro gingham red checked dress. Both the black and white dolls have matching peasant style shirts under their dresses. The pleated poof style sleeves have cloth hands peering out of the ruffled cuffs.

The condition of the doll is as expected for a well loved doll and for it's age. See photos which portray the doll's condition.
