I t is a relic of an era where racially inappropriate and insensitive products were widely available. We believe it serves as important tool for education about the past. A nd although we still have much room for improvements in race relations. JUST LOOK HOW FAR WE'VE COME!!

It is a children's counting book derived from a rhyme originally written for a minstrel show. "Ten Little Indians" was originally the title of a comic song written in the 1860's by Philadelphia songwriter Septimus Winner. The song made its way to England where another songwriter, named Frank Green, adapted it for use in a Victorian minstrel show giving it new lyrics. In each stanza of the lyrics, one of the boys disappears through a different cause: One choked his little self and then there were nine.

One overslept himself and then there were eight. One said he'd stay there and then there were seven.

One chopped himself in halves and then there were six. In summary, although the late nineteenth century is often referred to as the Golden Age of children's literature and it witnessed a profusion of books designed specifically for a young audience, such as Alice in Wonderland , Little Women , and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , it represented only a portion of the literate youth in America.

A frican - A merican children, in particular, would have found few depictions of themselves, and, of these, even fewer would have presented characters whom black children could respect and emulate, such as this one. This book speaks volumes about the race relations in the United States during the Jim Crow era.
