Perhaps the best quality Black Americana enameled sterling silver souvenir teaspoon ever made! This 5 5/8 inch sterling teaspoon was likely made around 1905 by Frank Smith. Titled "THE REAL THING, " ATLANTA GA, the spoon bears the bowl bears the memorable scene of an African American man eating a comically oversized slice of watermelon.Like many such spoons, it bears the additional scene to the handle of another man eating an enameled slice. However, this example bears a third enameled vignette to the stem, an enameled woman carrying a large basket of cotton on her head. While two enameled scenes on one spoon are unusual, three are generally unheard of and reserved for very special orders. Reverse bears a molded art nouveau "lady liberty" and american eagle. Condition is exquisite, with perhaps just a tiny margin of loss to the white edge along the top of the bowl where it meets the stem.
