We can see that the hidden mother is African American because of the hand behind the babys neck. When tilted, the areas surrounding the baby all turn light.

This has something to do with the emulsion and/or the black backing. Straight on, it makes for very good viewing and would reproduce well. There are black striations in the space above the arm.
