You are viewing an important and rare Black Forest carving of a black-a-moor in the form of an inkwell. It is over 100 years old and was probably made around 1890 in Germany or Switzerland. The hair and beard of the figure has been ebonized and his lips, teeth, and a gold color headband have also been painted. He also has exceptionally fine glass eyes of a hazel color.

His head opens on a hinge to reveal a spring loaded inkwell with a metal lid and the original glass ink bottle. The inkwell is about 4 1/2 inches high and 4 inches wide at the widest point. It is in pretty good condition. The blackamoor is missing one of his earrings and one strand of beads around his neck. There is a hairline split in the wood running down from the underside of the lid to the top of the neck on the right hand side of the sculpture, but the integrity of the wood is not affected.

There are also three holes in the top of his head which you can see in one of the photos. These are possibly pen holder holes, I'm not sure. Feel free to ask any questions. All items I sell are fully guaranteed to be as I have described them.

Most of my auctions are listed with no reserve. Thank you, your business is greatly appreciated.
