Dated 1798 Etched Powder Horn Named To Yaft Freemen, Pennsylvania Freed Slave
Up for sale is this excellent and extremely rare dated 1798 etched antique hunting powder horn to a named African American in Bucks and Montgomery Counties in Pennsylvania, USA. The approximately 11 inch long powder horn has a brass cap end (with early cut nails) and carved horn spout. On the brass cap, it is etched, "YAFT FREEMAN 1798" (see pictures). Excellent research by a local historical genologic hobbyist thanks Liz! Has uncovered incredible details about this gentleman. Freeman, whose date of birth is unknown, was a black man who lived, and owned property (about 4 acres total) in Warwick, Bucks County and Mooreland, Montgomery County Pennsylvania. He was married with 2 children (daughters) and died in 1826 or so. Included in the pictures are a photograph of his original last will and testament, where he leaves his belongings and property, after paying off his debts, to his wife and children. It clearly states that Yaft was a "man of colour". It is safe to assume the either Yaft, or one of his close ancestors, was a freed slave as many blacks at that time changed their name to "Freemen" or something of similar character to indicate their freed status. The etching is deep, clear and very legible although the "98" in 1798 did not photograph to well! Brass exhibits a wonderful antique patina. The horn is also in excellent condition with only minimal expected antique wear. It also exhibits a wonderful antique patina. A great piece with wonderful supporting evidence!

A great addition to any African American historical, Pennsylvania historical, US historical or antique powderhorn collection!
