Circa 1870's-1890's double black Americana dancers clockwork toy. This classic clockwork toy was made by the famous Ives Toy Co. The total height of the toy from the bottom of the base to the tops of the figures' heads is 10 inches. The base of the fine quality dovetailed wooden box that the figures dance on measures 6 3/8 inches from right to left & by 3 5/8 inches from front to back & is 4 inches tall. The weight of the toy including the detachable key is 1 pound 5.2 ounces.

The toy is in superb working order. When the clockwork is wound & the activating lever is pushed down the figures dance around in very rapid motion for a good amount of time. They tap their feet on the top of the wooden box in a pleasing rhythm. One figure which is wearing pants would have originally had a cloth upper garment. The other is wearing a dress with the black section of the cloth somewhat worn.

This figure would have originally had more cloth on the dress over what is currently present. All of the cloth clothing currently present on both figures is entirely original. Both figures would have originally had head scarves or small cloth hats. The bodies of the figures are constructed of wood & composition with cloth clothing. The right arm of the figure wearing the pants was, at one time broken at the elbow & has been glued back together. This looks like it was a clean break with nothing missing in this area. This same figure is missing the left hand which was replaced a long time ago (possibly in period) with a handmade leather kidskin glove. The figure wearing the dress is missing both hands which were replaced a long time ago (possibly in period) with handmade leather kidskin gloves.

One support wire for a figure is bent just a trifle. But, this does not, in any way, adversely effect the superb action of the toy. We have black lighted the toy & we do not see any signs of any paint touch-up under the black light. The cast iron key, which is of the same era as the toy, winds the toy correctly.

However, this period key is not the original Ives key that would have come with the toy. The original key would have had a longer shaft & a different shape to the top section. There is a bit of wear at & around the key hole from the contact of the key during winding. A classic early black Americana toy, made by the famous Ives Toy Co. This toy would certainly make a pleasing addition to any fine collection of early American toys or black Americana related items. This item is inventory #8502.
