Slaves who only worked on their owner's plantation did not have to have tags. The earliest known dated tag is 1800, although earlier dates have been reported. Until recently, the latest known dated tag is 1864.

The only other known city issuing Tags is Charleston Neck, a suburb of Charleston. Charleston Neck: A suburb of Charleston, with the slave tag law passed in1848.

Tags are known to exist from 1849 and 1850. Occupations include Servant and Fruiterer. Known examples at the time of this listing are as follows. 1849 Neck Servant #115: Verified. Wright collection, 29 June 1917, as lot 1427.
