1880's BLACK AMERICANA BOXED CHROMOLITHOGRAPH GAME JOLLY (BLACK) TARGET GAME
Rare and original, 1880's Black Americana Chromolithographed, Boxed Ball Toss Game titled "The Jolly Darkie Target Game" by McLoughlin Bros. This wonderful, Game of Skill comes in its original, paperboard box which measures approx.

6 1/2 by 13 by 1 1/2 deep. The top panel of the Box lid is illustrated with a wonderful caricature portrait of an African American man seated on a drum with his mouth open wide and holding Minstrel instruments - a banjo and a tambourine. He wears a patriotic red and white striped bow tie and a blue jacket with white stars mimicking the type of suite worn by Uncle Sam. Inside the box is the die cut, figural Target Board which is nearly identical to the image on the lid.

It is a stunningly beautiful Chromolithograph representation of the same African American / Black man depicted on the lid - his wide open mouth is the "target" into which the balls were to be tossed and below the instruments represent chutes with various numerical values that would determine the value of each toss. The Box carries the mark of the premier 19th century chromolithographer - McLoughlin Brothers of New York and the chromolithography on the Box Lid and the Target Board is of THE very highest quality as can be seen in the scans below. This rare and exceptionally attractive, 1890's Black Americana Boxed Ball Toss Target Game is in very good condition. The pastedown illustration on the lid is bright and vibrant and very attractive with some light surface creases but no significant soiling and no surface loss. The right hand and bottom end flaps of the lid are intact but the lid lacks the top flap and a bit less than half of the left hand side flap. The base of the Box is complete, intact and sound with all side flaps present and with no breaks or loss. The Target Board is well preserved - clean and crisp - bright and vibrant. The paperboard has some light creases radiating from the opening at the mouth but ove4rall the Target Board is well preserved and displays nicely. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the content and the condition of this 19th century Black Americana Boxed Ball Toss Target Skill Game.
